The legendary, late Aretha Franklin said it well, ”What you want? Baby, I got it.” And here’s how you can get it…

It’s this little, powerful, profound thing called “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.”

Today’s S.O.L. Story was inspired by several of my clients this week — both men and women. This topic of respect came up. Specifically in the context of “self respect.”

Yesterday we spoke about the Art Of BEING After Betrayal (EPISODE 380). And that your BEING will allow healing from the feeling of betrayal.

Restoring faith and trust is vital.

One way to do this is by respecting yourself, my dear.

Do you respect yourself? (This is the Bazillion Dollar question…)

When I think of respect, I think about “showing respect.”

How do we do this?

1. SHOW UP.

Show up for yourself.

Physically.

Mentally.

Spiritually.

Emotionally.

Financially.

Are you showing up?

Are you showing up out of respect for yourself?

And why are you showing up?

2. FOLLOW UP.

It’s how you’re showing up for yourself.

We’re taught how to respect others.

We’re taught the rules and expectations.

BUT…

We’re usually not taught a whole lot about self-respect.

BUT…

YOU must do this for YOURSELF.

Establish your ground rules — what’s acceptable and unacceptable.

This is based on what you desire.

What are the rules that you’ve set for yourself?

What are your rules? Your expectations? For yourself and others?

People will show you respect how YOU show YOURSELF respect.

Or as I call it, The Diamond Rule — people will treat us the we treat ourselves.

How are you treating yourself?

I was also asked the difference between love and respect, as well as self-esteem and self confidence.

This is what I told her…

Love is unconditional.

Respect is conditional.

What conditions have you set up for showing yourself respect? For teaching others the respect you expect?

Respect is a result of abilities, qualities, or achievements.

Like I said, it’s not simply showing up. It’s about how you’re showing up.

And what you do when you show up.

Self-esteem is based on your value. This is unconditional.

It’s also based on your abilities. This is the conditional part.

One of them being your ability to RESPECT YOURSELF.

Self-confidence is based on your beliefs (trust, belief, faith.)

It kind of sounds like what we talked about yesterday when we spoke about hope, huh?

It’s also a feeling that comes from appreciating your own abilities or capabilities.

It starts with unconditionally loving yourself because you know your value.

Because you love yourself, you show up.

If you respect yourself, my dear, you WILL be able to confidently show up with RESPECT — out of respect and IN respect for yourself.

This will build upon your value, AND develop your self-esteem and confidence.

Show up. Follow up.

Then follow through.

This will create your breakthrough.
